I caught the mention of Camp Wakonda during a search--I worked there in '77 and '78 as well....we must know each other.

I was the Field Sports director (Rifle, Shotgun, Archery) Jim Berger was my Archery right arm at both Wakonda and later (After my appendectomy) at Camp Eagle South of Fremont, NE near Cedar Bluffs. I remember waking up Monday moring doubled over in pain, staggering to the dining hall and Bud Shirie putting me in a car to the hospital in Atlantic.

IIRC, the Catholic church bought Wakonda from the Mid America Coluncil a couple of years later. I always prefered Wakonda to Cedars as far as dining hall camps went. Since my troop usually camped at Camp Eagle with Patrol dining in the campsite, I do have a special place in my heart for Camp Eagle...but the walk down the road carrying the rifles a week after having my appendex removed is an...uncomfortable..memory.

My how the mind goes when you get aged ;-D

I worked at Camp Wakonda the Sunner of ...hmmm...'77 or '78. I remember the pizza and with the eyes of age, it seems to be some of the best pies of my youth. We have a few decent pizza joints in the Tucson area. The one thing that they have in common is that they use the old-fashioned stone hearth oven, not the more modern (and inferior IM <NOT SO> HO) chain ovens popular in the other pizza places...still it is difficult to beat the Little Caesar's $5.00 hot and ready pizza for cost and alacrity.

My appendix actually ruptured somewhere between Griswold and Atlantic. I was working at Camp Wakonda at the time I was afflicted with the appendix problem. I have wonderful memories of Camp Wakonda and a likttle place in Griswold called the Griswold Inn. IIRC it had Michelob Special Dark on tap and pretty decent food as well. I would stop by for a beer while my clothes washed at the laundromat.

Whoa Mr. Gunslinger... You and I are neighbors. In fact, as I write this, I am at my job, in Indian Wells, CA. Small world, huh?

It is amazing the far flung places that broadcasters who have some Nebraska connections have landed. As that great philosopher Anonomous is credited as saying, "If you ain't where you're at, you're nowhere".
